COVID-19 has created challenges in all parts of our lives. Our congregation’s youth and children’s ministry feels those challenges too. We have had to move most of our activity to the online realm. While we look forward to getting back together in person, we remember that we remain the body of Christ even in our physical separation. Read on to learn about what we’ve been doing since March!
Once per week, we hold Check-in Meetings via Zoom. Youth share what they’ve been up to and we just hang out for about an hour. Sometimes we mix in games or discussions about what is going on in the world.
Every other Saturday, Pastor Tim and I have led Children’s Church on Zoom. This ~20 minute program includes music, Scripture, a children’s sermon, prayer, and fellowship for families with children.
Eight of our youth joined our summer Youth Book Club. We’ve been reading and discussing Parker Palmer’s Let Your Life Speak: Listening to the Voice of Vocation. Our youth always have thoughtful and interesting discussions about vocation, gifts, and life in general.
On July 18, we held a one-day Vacation Bible School called The Amazing gRace! Children enjoyed “traveling” with Jonah and Paul as they shared God’s message. We enjoyed storytelling, crafts, music, and a scavenger hunt. A good time was had by all!
On July 25, youth and children’s families pitched in to make 70 bagged lunches at home, and then deliver them to St. Mark’s. The meals were then delivered to a dorm run by Roof Above for people whose path out of homelessness is through employment. We will look for more remote activities that will enable us to serve our community.
On July 26 and August 2, we celebrated our four recent high school graduates on Senior Sunday. While this year’s Senior Sunday was a little different than in past years, we still enjoyed sending them off to college with God’s blessings.
Recently, several of the youth have started meeting weekly via Zoom to play a board game. Fun never stops for St. Mark’s youth!
We look forward to Confirming three St. Mark’s Youth on Sunday, August 23 at the 9:30 am Facebook Live Worship Service.
We will continue to connect and build friendships online until such a time that we can re-engage in person safely.
Blessings and peace to you!
