In today’s gospel, Jesus tells a rich man, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” Jesus’ verbs, “go, sell, give, come and follow” direct us toward lives of self-denial, self-giving, and discipleship to him. In a materialist and aspirational society, the prophet Amos also reminds us, “Seek the Lord and live,” that we might care for the poor and vulnerable. Both Amos and Jesus invite us to lives of discipleship and service.
