James writes that God has chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith, saying to stop showing favoritism in the assembly by treating the rich with more honor than the poor. Psalm 146 echoes this saying that God watches over the stranger, orphan and widow. Jesus models a life of faith and work for us by blessing and healing the stranger and the sick. Mark’s gospel began with Jesus’ words, “Repent and believe,” and in him we see and experience God’s salvation.
