On December 5, we had a GREAT lock-in! Our youth brought lots of friends with them , and we played a get-to-know-you game and Ga Ga Ball, had some free time, worshiped God, played Secret Service, watched a movie, and enjoyed breakfast together in the morning. A special thanks to Jay Jacob and Brandi Dotson for volunteering their time to be with the youth on a Friday night!
On December 7 we enjoyed a Confirmation Mentor Lunch. Our Confirmation Mentors joined our middle schoolers for lunch (thanks to the Stones!), we played “Fruit Basket Turnover,” and we had an activity about the true Christmas story. Our mentors are doing a great job of building friendships with our confirmands, and we are thankful to God for them!
On December 23 our youth gathered to serve at Room in the Inn. Room in the Inn is a program through Charlotte’s Urban Ministry Center where churches open their doors once a week to house our city’s homeless. Our youth set up beds, prepared dinner, ate dinner with twelve homeless men, and prepared a bagged lunch for our neighbors to take with them the next day. Our youth do a great job of interacting with our homeless guests, and we are proud of their commitment to serving others.
On Christmas Eve, our youth held a Live Nativity following the family Christmas Eve service. Parents also brought cookies to share with the congregation. Our youth always do a great job of helping to to bring the Christmas story to life!
On January 5, parents and youth gathered for lunch (thanks to the Ginns!) and to watch God’s Not Dead in the Youth Room. We held a discussion about this movie, what was good about its theology, what may have been lacking, and its overall message. Everyone was very thoughtful about this movie, and this is something we may do again down the line.
On January 11, Girl Scouts in our youth and children’s programs gathered with women in our church to earn their My Promise, My Faith pin. Our Scouts ate lunch, sang songs, and shared how Girl Scouting affects their faith and vice versa. Each Girl Scout left with an assignment to learn about a woman in the Bible and to give a presentation on her at our next meeting on February 8.
On January 18, we held another Confirmation Mentor Lunch. We ate lunch (thanks to Amy Jacob!), played a round of Catchphrase, and then engaged in an activity to help us pray for those who might struggle during the winter months.
On February 1, our youth will sponsor the Souper Bowl of Caring at St. Mark’s! Congregation members will bring soups, chili, and stews to share, and we will take donations for the Urban Ministry Center and take up non-perishable food items for Loaves & Fishes. Lunch will start at noon–hope to see you there!!
